Amazing Grace

Captain Newton was a sea captain who had an amazing experience during a voyage in the year of 1748. Back in those days the captain would always hold the ship’s wheel, to let go of it would cause the rudder to turn completely left or right, which would cause the ship to spin out of control and break up - hence, no matter what the weather was, someone had to stand at the ship’s wheel at all times - this would usually be the captain.

Captain Newton’s cargo was slaves - based in England, Captain Newton would travel to Spain for supplies, then pick up slaves from Ghana and take his human cargo to North America. The slaves were bound in chains to the floor and could hardly move, they were used to freezing water spilling onto the ship. One day Captain Newton was sailing through violent, stormy waters, conditions were deteriorating rapidly, and on this particular trip the captain feared the ship would break up. As Captain Newton struggled to hold onto the ship’s wheel to which he was chained by his second in command - he truly feared the worse.

The wind was roaring, the storm was turning into hurricane conditions, the slaves below could see nothing, they only felt the ice cold water wash over them every few minutes, but instead of screaming and crying out they began to sing what sounded like an hymn - they sang so loudly the captain could hear them above the torrential storm, over and over they sang their mantra. Captain Newton began to sing too, during the climax of the storm the captain could barely stand, but he was able to continue fueled by the power of the souls of the slaves, he swore it they survived the storm he would let everyone go free and become a minister.

Captain Newton’s ship did survive the storm, he turned the ship around and went back to Ghana and set the slaves free. The song they sang was an ancient African prayer possibly originating from Ancient egypt, it had no words, the slaves hummed the tune with love not anger, they believed they would be saved - their spell worked, and tune now has English lyrics written by Captain Newton who saw the error of his ways!

Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me.
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

When we've been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we've first begun.

The slaves could have responded with anger and hatred, instead they choose love and survived - they sang a prayer from their hearts, a prayer which all spells are, saved them all!
